Our goal is to help answer any questions that you may have about our surgery and general hospital services. We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions that we believe will be helpful in providing you with the information you need. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

  • I left a message when can I expect a response?
    Messages are checked daily, and calls are returned within 1 – 2 business days. If the office has been closed then messages will be answer within 1 week of the return to office date. All call are returned based on urgency. If you need immediate assistance or your condition becomes serious, please head to your nearest emergency department, urgent care clinic or call 911.
  • Does your office arrange for a translator?
    No. If you require a translator please bring one with you to the appointment.
  • Are there any resources to help me stop drinking alcohol?

  • How do I quit smoking?
    Quitting smoking can be tough, but having a quit plan that will prepare you for the bumps ahead is key to successfully quitting and staying quit. QuitNow is BC’s FREE quit smoking service available to all BC residents. They are funded by the government of British Columbia and managed by the BC Lung Foundation.   • How do I prepare for staying at VGH?

  • Where does my surgery take place?
    3rd floor Jim Pattison Pavilion. Check in at 899 West 12th Avenue information desk.
  • How can I optimize my health?
    Please go to 'Forms and Guidelines' on this site and review the information in the 'Diet and Movement' section for more information. Another great resource is 'Canada's food guide' which has some great tips for healthy eating as well as recipes.
  • How long will the appointment last?
    New consults are booked for 30 minutes and any follow up and post operation appointments are booked for 10 minutes. You can expect to be in our office for an hour to an hour and a half.
  • How much physical activity do I need to do?
    For adults 18 - 64, to achieve health benefits, adults aged 18 - 64 years should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more. It is also beneficial to add muscle and bone strengthening activities using major muscle groups, at least 2 days per week - more physical activity provides greater health benefits. For more info on physical activity guide by age, check out the Participaction - Get Active website, or download the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for activity guidelines for adults 18-64 years old. Alternatively go to 'Forms and Guidelines' section on this site and review the information in the 'Diet and Movement' section.
